However, there are exactly *ONE* person(s) who owns the domain name ChuckBrown.com. That would be…MOI.

There are 1,595,222 people in the U.S. with the last name Brown. Statistically the 4th most popular last name.

Famous people with the last name Brown:

Ayla Brown

Bryan Brown

Chad Brown

Chris Brown

Clancy Brown

Curtis Brown

Dana Brown

Devin Brown

Harry Joe Brown

Apparently, “famous” is a relative term. I know of Ayla, Bryan, Chris, Clancy (one of my favorite actors), Jim (my dad’s favorite football player), Sherrod, Tim and Willie. Don’t recognize the others. Savoy Brown is a person??

First of all, let me say that I don’t even know enough about technology to be dangerous. But I do love to observe. After reading a recent article in Business 2.0, I was quite captivated by the idea behind a new display technology called IMOD. The general idea is based on an observation of the way the brilliant colors of butterfly wings are reflected in nature. It’s a largely passive process when butterflies do it (requiring neither batteries nor hours of primping in front of a mirror) and in the same way, it uses just a fraction of what is used by current LCD and LED technologies.

The properties which make this kind of thing so exciting:

brilliant displays that can’t adjust and compete with whatever ambient light is available in your enviroment…even direct sunlight (see the pic)

incredibly low power consumption (effective uses no power whatsoever except when the image changes)

long life (while most of the technology is way too small to be seen by the naked eye, the general principle is simple enough that it should wear well over time)

adaptability (can easily be adopted across a wide range of platforms)

This is one of those technologies that you see and say, “Ah, yes…I can see where THIS is going!”

Here’s a brochure with a lot more info, for those who like this kinda stuff as much as I do.

Just exactly WHEN did snowman-building become a world-class sport…?!?

Since it’s nearly the end of July, it’s great to think “chilly” whenever possible…so it was with great relish (much like a hot dog!) that I devoured these pics today of an international snow sculpture competition that has apparently been going on for many years.

Frankly, I’ve never seen anything like them. But…if this kind of thing happens in a small place like Breckenridge, Colorado…similar events probably occur elsewhere as well.

You will be amazed…!!

Here are a couple things I’ve run across recently that you might enjoy:

Those crazy Japanese are “at it” again. No, I’ve never been to Japan… but I think I saw the movie. What a seemingly fascinating culture! And now, from the 21st Century Museum of Art at Kanazawa, enjoy their swimming pool art display. While this would last for about 4 days in America (too many idiots trying to dive thru the glass, and then suing for breaking their necks), it appears to be a popular attraction in the museum.

Oddly enough, the artist (Leandro Erlich) is Argentine, rather than Japanese. But I think he nailed their sensibility with this one. Of him, the BBC says: His large scale sculptures and installations create a world of trickery and illusion: doors cannot be opened, peepholes reveal the unexpected and mirrors do not reflect. Erlich makes art which challenges our idea of reality. He is interested in what we see, the spaces we occupy and the contexts we find ourselves in everyday. He constructs installations or complete physical worlds which the viewer enters.

You can see more pictures here, and you can get a better feel for it in this short video:

Elsewhere in the world, developers are spending that oil money to create a world-class set of attractions in Dubai for the jet set. I missed the initial announcement of this back in April, but it’s certainly worth note: The Da Vinci Towers Dubai brings new meaning to the term “ambitious project”. Outside the central core of this tower there are suites of rooms which will rotate, offering an ever-changing view.

Not only that, but power will be supplied by wind turbines between the floors and solar panels. Quite impressive…if they can keep the sound levels contained somehow. And even with only moderate winds, typical for the area, they are predicting that they’ll generate enough power for their own building, as well as several others of the same size.

If I’m reading the page right, you may actually be able to drive up to your room. Hmmm…

These pictures are beautiful. Do you find it at all sad that my first thought is that this would make a great location for the shooting of Die Hard 5: McClane Does Dubai? Maybe Bruce Willis and Harrison Ford can team up for this one…walker and wheelchair races might even be worth watching against that backdrop.

I doubt that your average person will be able to afford to holiday there…but at least we might be able to go stand outside and watch for awhile!

This looks like a really fun time. A bunch of folks went to something called Foocamp, and had a bunch of fun shooting pictures in the dark with an extended exposure.

This was obviously a cooperative effort, because the person would have to have stayed completely still in order to keep the images this sharp…so others were doing the lighting stuff. But there are some really interesting effects here.

Now go watch the slideshow. Takes about 5 minutes. And, admit it….as you watch… you wish you were there, too (I know I did). There’s more info on this stuff at EdibleLight.com.I’ve never been a big Flickr user. More a matter of time than anything else. But I ran across this earlier today and was really impressed. Talk about a slice-of-life! Just random photos from people’s lives around the world as they are being posted.

Flickrvision.com

Yes, it would be nice if the map scrolling could happen a little quicker, etc. But it’s really fun to sit and watch!
