This is great!

I am fascinated with self branding and updating my "About Me" page is literally at the top of my list for updates. I am still maturing in this community and appreciate this type of feedback.

Thanks!

Nice post...a lot covered. I think the keys are simple. Add value and provide a good experience - focused helps for both.

Great points Chuck! I definitely know that you practice what you preach. You have been tremendously helpful and willing to offer advice. I always appreciate your comments and suggestions.

I am not a blogger myself, my communication preferences are more of a visual nature, but I do see what seems to be an extreme over saturation of halfway thought out opinions and endorsements online. One point I would add to your comments about branding (and communication in general) would be "be concise" – I can't say I am always successful in this area, but in terms of online information browsing, personally, I don't really want to spend the time to read someone blathering on about "whatever". Say what you mean and move on. And, in terms of visual representation, if you don't have the time to put together a clean presentation, why should I take the time to look at what you have to say?

Preach it, brother. I couldn't agree more! I spent the afternoon today reviewing submissions to my web directory. My only criteria for the directory? That the site be appealing and offer some value. I couldn't approve more than about 10 of the 106 sites I reviewed. And I was being generous...i.e., if they offered some decent value, I overlooked design issues and the like. It's about helping people. If you can help people get from where they are to where they want to be, there's a decent chance you can make some money while doing that. If not, then just go work from 9-5 somewhere...because at least those companies understand that basic fact and they can worry about that end of it for you. Otherwise, you're fooling yourself about your chance of accomplishing anything...unless you're willing to do it in an unethical and short-lived manner.

Chuck,

Thanks for the kind words and plug. Excellent article!!

You have a bunch of very valid points. I won't attempt to comment on all, but in general I believe the biggest problem is that people see the dollar signs and not the potential to help others.

The most frequent example is the promotion of products.

On any given day I could open 10 Internet marketing related blogs and I almost guarantee that 9 out of 10 of them are promoting a product (probably more than 1) they've never read/tried themselves.

I won't lie and say I'm perfect or anything close, but I always try to do things ethically and teach others to do the same. That means I won't recommend something that I haven't personally tried myself. I know you're the exact same way and I admire that. It's so obvious to me when someone is promoting something because it has a good affiliate program or the creator paid them to do so.

There are very few people who have the ability to get past the idea of making quick money and instead offering something that will actually help others. If these people would realize that, they would finally figure out how to actually make money online instead of just talking about it.
